The “Bakony”, one of the most romantic regions of Hungary, is situated north of the Lake Balaton. Its highest point is Köris Hill (706 meters = 2316 feet). Most of the Hills are covered by unbroken woodlands, mainly by beech forests and oak forests. Several types of mushrooms grow in the forests, in the best years there is an enormously rich porcini and chanterelle harvest. The Bakony is known for its richness in games that can be hunted on the ground. Not only red deer, roe deer or wild-boar can be found here but also mouflon.
Németbánya is a quiet little village, a cul-de-sac, embraced by forests. It lies in the northwest part of the Bakony Hills, in the valley of the Bitva stream. Because of how it is situated, the settlement is an ideal starting point for discovering the Bakony Hill region, rich in natural resources and cultural heritage. The beautiful natural environment, the built-up forest roads, the clean air, all provide the visitors an excellent opportunity for organizing hiking and cycling tours. It is not a mere chance that the Hungarian Countrywide Blue Tour passes through the village. Tourist Map of the Bakony Hills can be bought on the spot.
There are less than one hundred permanent residents living in the village. However, it is a popular get away for families, wishing for relaxation or recreation.
The village was populated mainly by German-speaker families until the end of World War II. This fact is reflected in the architectural style of the settlement; most of the houses are typical “shwabish” peasant porch-houses, constructed in the style of the region.
